History
The history of Katong Flower Shop is closely entwined with the development of the post war flower industry in Singapore. Katong Flower Shop which was set up in 1948, has built up a strong reputation among industry members and the Singapore public. It has pioneered a number of key innovations in the industry.
Early Importer
In the early days, orchids and gladiolus were the only flowers of commercial value, and were supplied locally. Flowers were a luxury item for the rich, and demands were limited but steady. It was then that new flowers began to arrive from Cameron Highlands. Katong Flower Shop was one of the earliest importers of these flowers.
Variety
Chrysanthemums, carnations, lilliums and roses began to give the flower trade the exciting variety. Katong Flower Shop was the first florist in Singapore to import flowers from Taiwan and Japan. Tulip bulbs and hyacinthus were imported from Holland and then later cut flowers. Today Katong Flower Shop also imports flowers from many non-traditional sources. Over a period of time, the use of flowers expands from its traditional role in wedding and church decorations to a means of expressing tender emotions. With growth comes greater diversity of innovations.
